Title: Communications Director
Reports to: Deputy Executive Director
Salary: $70,000 – $90,000 (Based on Experience)

In response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment and low wage work in Black communities, the National Black Worker Center (NBWC) was launched in 2011. The NBWC is a national network of Black worker centers. We support and incubate worker centers who empower Black workers to advance their rights and improve the quality of jobs in key employment sectors. We provide education about the impacts of low-wage work and unemployment on Black communities, and work to prevent racial discrimination in hiring and other employment practices and policies. Through our network we intervene in the labor market to improve racial and economic employment conditions.
Partnering regional Black worker centers are in Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, Il, New Orleans, LA, Baltimore, MD, Raleigh-Rocky Mount, NC, Greenville, MS, Washington, DC, Pittsburgh, PA, Philadelphia, PA and Oakland, CA. Our network consists of membership-based, and member-driven organizations that utilize a combination of leadership development, organizing, policy advocacy, and strategic communications to build power to address the Black job crisis.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the Communications Director (CD) will serve as a member of the NBWC leadership team. They will be responsible for managing, directing, and creating strategy for the organization’s internal and external communications. The CD will build the foundation of the
NBWC’s communications. The primary functions include leading, directing, and scaling the next phase of the NBWC’s national communications strategy; serve as organizational spokesperson as appropriate; serve as media contact for the organization; and develop a brand voice across all platforms.
- Supervise the Social Media and Marketing Specialist and other communications personnel. This includes establishing and managing workplans, performance management, and recruiting/training key communication staff as budget allows
- Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy to include traditional media, social media, and non-traditional media
- Develop a brand voice for the NBWC and maintain brand integrity across all media platforms
- Develop, manage, and cultivate media relationships, including contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders.
- Lead a team of communication, marketing, and design professionals, including staff, interns, and organizational contractors.
- Prepare and manage all communications material
- Assist in the development of digital, video, audio, and print content.
- Oversee the management of the NBWC’s website and social media channels
- Provide training to the NBWC staff and volunteers as needed to maintain brand integrity in the community
- Track engagement across all media platforms and make data-driven communication plans to build and sustain the NBWC’s reach and mission visibility
- Manage the NBWC’s presence at campaign events, conferences, and etc. to maintain brand integrity.
- Promote communication and cooperation between organization’s departments
- Create and manage a communications budget to support communication strategies
Other related responsibilities, as assigned by Deputy Executive Director.
The Communications Director will have proven experience in creating and driving effective, large-scale communication strategies; exhibit impeccable copywriting and copy-editing abilities; possess a strong leadership track record; and a passion for the mission and vision of the National Black Worker Center.
- 6+ years of experience in leadership and communications
- Experience in cross-functional leadership
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills
- Proficient knowledge of content management systems and digital graphics production
- Proficient knowledge of social media platforms and social media marketing
- Experience with search engine marketing, Google Analytics, etc.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite – Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams – and Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign)
- Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills showing flexibility as needed; adept at dealing with conflicting/changing priorities
- Skilled at managing and meeting varying deadlines
- Knowledge of Black workers, the workplace, and racial justice issues
- Demonstrated commitment to Black workers, workers’ rights, and social justice and racial justice values
- Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent analytical and judgment skills – demonstrated by the ability to assess information and act strategically
- Ability to work nights and weekends
- Ability to travel in and out of state with overnights
SALARY & BENEFITS:
Salary range is $70,000 – $90,000 depending on experience.
